Cholesterol feeding alters the metabolism of thoracic-duct lymph lipoprotein cholesterol in rabbits but not in rats.

چکیده
1. Labelled thoracic-duct lymph was collected from rats and rabbits after test meals containing [(14)C]cholesterol and [2-(3)H]glyceryl trioleate. 2. The metabolism of labelled cholesterol and triglyceride was studied in normally fed and cholesterol-fed rats and rabbits injected with radioactive lymph from the same species. 3. In normally fed animals of both species, 10min after intravenous administration, about 80% of lymph cholesteryl ester but only about 10% of triglyceride was recovered in the liver after clearance from the plasma. This distribution is consistent with participation of ;remnant' particles in the metabolism of dietary lymph particles. 4. The metabolism of cleared lymph lipoprotein constituents was unchanged in cholesterol-fed rats, but the recovery of cholesteryl ester in the livers of the cholesterol-fed rabbits was decreased to 30% of the cleared dose. 5. The low recovery in cholesterol-fed rabbits was accounted for mainly by increased hydrolysis of cholesteryl ester. 6. It is proposed that differences between rats and rabbits in metabolism of dietary cholesterol might be partly due to the observed enhancement of hydrolysis of lymph lipoprotein cholesteryl ester in rabbits.

Experimentally-Induced Metabolic Acidosis Does not Alter Aortic Fatty Streak Formation in High-Cholesterol Fed Rabbits
Objective(s)Cardiovascular disease causes a major clinical problem in patients with end stage renal disease. Since metabolic acidosis is very common in patients with end stage renal disease, we aimed to investigate the effect of experimentally-induced metabolic acidosis on serum lipid profile and aortic fatty streak (FS) formation in normal and high-cholesterol fed rabbits.Materials and Methods...
متن کاملAccelerated Cholesterol Accumulation in Homologous Arterial Transplants in Cholesterol-Fed Rabbits
Accelerated coronary artery disease has become a major complication to heart transplantation in humans. Therefore, we have developed a surgical model in the rabbit, with transplantation of the thoracic aorta as a bypass graft onto the abdominal aorta of another rabbit The model permits the study of cholesterol metabolism in transplanted arteries. The graft did not accumulate cholesterol for as ...
متن کاملSerum and lymph lipids in rabbits with carbon tetrachloride-induced cirrhosis of the liver.
Lymph flow and the composition of lymph lipids from the hepatic and thoracic ducts of rabbits with cirrhosis of the liver (induced by 46-51 intramuscular injections of a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and olive oil at 4-day intervals) have been compared with those of control animals injected with olive oil only. In cirrhotic animals, the concentration of lymph lipids was not greatly altered, b...
متن کاملAlterations in the Fatty Acid Composition of Human Lymph and Serum Lipoproteins by Single Feedings.
Dole and co-workers ( 1 ) reported that the fatty acid composition of serum chylomicrons and other serum lipid classes was remarkably stable despite the feeding of fats of widely different composition. Blomstrand and Dahlbach (2) analyzed the fatty acid composition of human thoracic duct chyle in two subjects after the feeding of fat formulas and observed that lymph triglycerides closely resemb...

Background: Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of mortality in the developed and some developing countries. Some people believe that opium abuse has beneficial effects for reducing blood lipids and atherosclerosis prevention. In this study, the effect of oral opium addiction on lipid profile and atherogenesis in normal and hypercholesterolemic rabbits was studied. Methods: Thirty two male Newz...
